Listen up.

Every once in a while you hit a fever pitch with your work. But often, when you work with music journalists, there is a silver lining. One of the best things about having music journalist friends is when they take a moment to recommend you music.

Recently, I got a text from my friend (and amazingly talented writer) Ben Rayner who writes for Canada’s largest daily newspaper, the Toronto Star.

He knew about many things going on in my life, including the rather mundane fact that whilst working with Arcade Fire and many other talented Canadian bands, my water heater didn’t really care and decided to blow a valve and leak water through my ceiling.

Timing, they say, is everything.

Mundane details like this, often lead to brilliant recommendations. Ben sent me a text saying that I should listen to Rill Rill by Sleigh Bells. I don’t know where he was, or how he was listening to it, but I’m going to hypothesize a little and say that perhaps there was a message in the lyrics “so this is it then?/ you’re here to win friend/ click click saddle up see you on the moon then” to motivate me that all was going to get better soon, and to calm down perhaps…

Gorgeous little track, and brand new too. Moral of the story? Music cures the soul most days, even when your hot water tank is being a jerk.

Listen to the Brooklyn duo’s Rill Rill below. It’s off their debut record, called Treats. Billboard talks to them as they tour the US, here.
