The Look Ahead: Chilly Gonzales, Milk & Bone, Shad, Splash’N Boots, Nick Cave

Tuesday, September 4th, 2018

Grammy award-winner Chilly Gonzales returns to complete the final instalment of his popular solo piano series – Solo Piano III – on September 7, 2018. The album comes six years after Solo Piano II and, according to Gonzales, at “a more problematic inflection point.” “Like its predecessors, it’s a mostly happy ending in C major, but there is more dissonance, tension and ambiguity along the way… The musical purity of Solo Piano III is not an antidote for our times, it is a reflection of all the beauty and ugliness around us.

The documentary about Chilly Gonzales – Shut Up And Play The Piano – which first premiered at the Berlinale, is being released on October 5, 2018 in North America. The film will screen at Pop Montreal as Film POP 2018’s official closing film on Sunday, September 30, 2018.

This July, Montreal’s Milk & Bone performed on the famed Plains of Abraham in Quebec City at the Festival d’été de Québec as part of a monumental all-women line-up opening for Cyndi Lauper and Lorde. The duo were also invited to join in on Lauper’s massive hit Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. They recently released a new version of their song BBBLUE dubbed Summertime Sadness Edit. The original piece is off the duo’s sophomore effort, Deception Bay, which was released in February 2018 and was subsequently nominated on this year’s Polaris Music Prize long list.

Shad is the host of the Emmy and Peabody award-winning Netflix Original docu-series Hip-Hop Evolution and is a former host of CBC Radio’s flagship arts & culture program ‘q’. In 2011, his album TSOL won Rap Recording of the Year at the JUNO Awards. Three of his full-length albums (The Old Prince, TSOL and Flying Colours) were shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. For his new album, Shad has vibrantly imagined and created an entirely new world. A Short Story About A War releases October 26 on Secret City Records. This concept album holds a mirror to our world – a provocative story told through disarmingly catchy songs that weaves through issues of migration, environment, politics and the human spirit. The album features luminaries like Kaytranada, 2oolman of A Tribe Called Red, and Lido Pimienta, to crafty indie rockers Yukon Blonde, and Toronto rap veterans Ian Kamau, Eternia, and DJ T Lo. Their contributions bring multiple textures and colours to Shad’s singular vision.

Award-winning Canadian children’s entertainers Splash’N Boots are bringing their all-new live show to stage across Canada. Much like their most recent Juno Award-nominated album Love, Kisses and Hugs, the upcoming tour will be full of important Little Big Moments – moments of dance, laughter, connection, and love. Splash’N Boots can also be seen daily on Treehouse Television and on Treehouse on Demand.

Splash’N Boots has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 from every ticket sold will go to Musicounts to support access to music education for young children. The Big Love, Kisses and Hugs Tour was inspired by a little boy named Nicholas who was being bullied at school. When Nicholas met Splash’N Boots, the duo gave him a Yellow and Blue heart-shaped pillow and told him he could hug it anytime he needed it and to remember that he will always be part of the Yellow and Blue Family, no matter what. For his birthday, Nicholas told his friends and family to bring money instead of presents so he could buy other kids hug pillows too. He raised $200 because he wanted other kids to be loved and have hug pillows too. Nicholas’ inspiring love movement has in turn been embraced by Splash’N Boots. On the upcoming tour, one child in every community where the tour stops will receive The Big Heart Award. They’ll be looking for a child who is doing amazing things to connect people in the community and someone who could use an extra bit of love and support.
